Predicting the Future

I foresee something happening soon... but this has nothing to do with any special talents or gifts. No... it just has to do with the fact that I know my neighbor very well. So I know she's going to be kicking her son out tonight, AGAIN. He does not live with her, he's just been visiting for the past week. Methinks his visit is over after what happened today.

Dad and I went shopping to get a few things; we wound up being out longer than expected but that's another story... when we got home we got up the driveway and dad headed for the front door and I went across the road to grab the mail. Just as I got back to the other side of the road, Komack came meandering up the driveway onto the sidewalk. My first thought was Chris must have been letting him out as we came home and Komack just got away from him, but I looked and Chris was nowhere to be seen. So I grabbed Komack's collar and saw he'd broken the cable for his tie-out. His feet were wet and covered in sulfur so he'd obviously been in the creek. I have NO idea how long he was out, or loose for that matter. I gave my dad the bags I'd been carrying and grabbed my phone to call Patty right away but only got her voicemail. Dad brought our spare leash out (wandering dogs seem to be a frequent thing in our area, particularly in warmer weather so we have a leash to keep any of them close while we call/find/wait for their owners to come get them) and we walked over to Patty's. We knocked several times and waited for about five minutes but Chris never came to the door. We looked at the tie out and it was draped over the top of the banister on the deck - which HAD to have been done intentionally because it is fastened UNDER the deck and is not long enough for the dog to get on the deck when he's fastened to it... actually I'm still not sure how in the world that would have happened because there is no way to get the tie out on the deck unless you throw it up directly above where it's secured. But anyway point is however it got like that Chris must have done it, leaving Komack with hardly any length left to run around.

So anyway when Chris didn't answer, we took Komack back home and found some chain in the garage and then walked him back over to his own yard and got him chained up again. Then I called Patty again and this time she answered but she said she had not gotten the message I'd left. So I told her what had happened, including that the cable was up over the banister on the deck. While I was on the phone with her Chris came out and got Komack and took him inside.

Chris has been kicked out before, for various irresponsible and disrespectful behavior. So there is no doubt with something as big as endangering her dog Chris will be kicked out again. He is PLENTY old enough to know better (late teens) yet he is one of those kids that just does not seem to understand or care that they need to be more mature and grow up.

I am just glad that Komack was around when we got home and we were able to get him; we don't live on the main road but we are close to it, and there is a lot more traffic on that road and the road we live on than there used to be and it truly is not safe for a pet to be out running around like that.

Holy cramolee... Lucky for Komack that you and your dad got there before he could get hurt, Leah. I agree that it's extremely irresponsible to allowing pets to run around without a leash, but it sounds to me like your neighbor's son really needs a serious wake-up call. I wonder if Komack being hurt (or worse, heaven forbid) might be that wake-up call, but I sure hope it doesn't have to be...
